Fear Not, the Gods Shall Not Abandon

Our absence is merely the result of a heavy bout of trials foisted upon us by those sinister Giants and Loki himself; I fear that soon, destruction may be resting wearily upon the shoulders of all. Midgard beware, your time of struggles is soon upon you!

Loki, That Trickster

It seems some foul play has taken place in our game – a corruption of our names, and our secrets between game and database – due to some poorly mismatched liaisons. We have dealt with this, however, and all login errors should be gone! (Unless you forget your own name, that is… in which case Odin help you, for you are beyond the reach of those who walk Midgard.)

April Fool’s Day… what trouble could Loki be up to now?

The Voyage Nears

My brazen warriors, we have come so very far in so short of time. Across this final watery abyss awaits our treasure, and onward we will sail! The release of the game’s beta is within grasp, and Rune Raiders will be there for all to see. We’re as roiled with anticipation as you all must be, and we will not disappoint! To the battle ahead! Ahoy!

It’s SL again! HUGE updates!

Hey! It’s everyone’s favourite dictator for life, S. L. Johnson!
I have some YGGDRASILL SIZED updates for you all!

The power runes are looking great! I have finished a graphic for each of them.
I have also made the graphics for the sound and music buttons and log in, new account, etc buttons. JOY OF JOYS!
Also the Curse Rune! I bet you’ll ALL REALLY LOVE THAT ONE.

And we press onward through the driving wind and snow. TO THE LAND OF MEAD AND BATTLE!
Looking forward to our first sneak peak release, which is coming SOON.

Later, valiant Vikings! This has been a broadcast of the S & L Johnson network…

The Facebook Fight

In an effort to expand our influences to the Land of Many Faces, we have adapted our applet to the size restrictions for their applications. With the reduction to 740 x 480, we hope to bring our challenges to those prepared to raid by our side. The more compact interface shouldn’t influence anything we have planned, however.

A new source of power appears… The Order Rune

The Order Rune. Few have encountered this little piece of lordly might, but those who have speak of its use in highest regard.

The Order Rune sorts the field by color, attempting to create potential triangles with every color on the field. While the triangles may not be perfect for one-go destruction, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed. This rune is a single use only, sorting the board once before vanishing.

A Sneak Peek!

The Reveal Rune in action. Don’t worry, raiders, the graphics are mostly temporary. Just revel in the power, of Power Runes!

Account Creation Nears Completion

The days long voyage to set up an in-applet account creation are coming to a close, and success is within grasping. With the valor of our warriors and the minor victories to point, we’re readying to recruit more to our grand cause.

The alpha will be coming soon! Please contact us at minnek@hexhacker.net or shawnleroy@hexhacker.net, and we’ll clear you for testing.

A Glorious Battle!

I have defeated the foul Jotunn — that’s frost giant, for you villagers — known as the user interface, and while still looking as ugly as the face of Nidhoggr itself, it is functioning superbly. With this, the game takes one more step towards a testable alpha for the most devoted to our Rune Voyage here!

What lies await across the sea? Plunder? A brutal clash of force and might? Let us set sail!

Rescued from Niflheim, thanks to the great and all-powerful Minnek:

The lost post!

Sure you’ve played all those action packed games that make you find similar objects and match them in a row to get rid of them. I think the first one was Connect 4. But none of those games have very interesting features. The only special stuff is entirely run by chance and takes no skill! Those days are over, my friend! Because what we at Hex Hacker have in store for you, the beloved gaming community, is far greater than anything that has preceded us!

We’re talking about more interactivity! More , well, FUN for lack of a better word.

The game dynamics of Rune Raiders of Elder Futhark are almost entirely original. The basic concept is similar to some games, but that’s where we draw the line here. And to help make the game an even more interesting and fun packed experience, we came up with something new. Power Runes! And don’t forget Plunder!

First, let me list the Power Runes we have thought up for both basic game modes: Single Player and Multi-Player.

There are 10 POWER runes used in either mode. A total of 12, with 2 reserved for both Single Player and Multi-Player. 8 are used in both.

The 8 used in both:

1) Reveal Rune: Highlights the largest cluster of identical runes once so the player can find their next attack THAT MUCH EASIER. It’s not OP, it’s only a small advantage and not always useful, especially if you already have good eye sight. No offense meant to you blind people… then again, you probably aren’t reading this right now, huh?

2) Shrinky Rune: Gives smaller attacks (Tiny Triangles) x4 the amount of points. Small triangles are less than an inch in length ( or 72 pixels on most people’s resolutions).  Anyway, the point is to make small attacks, which is a lot harder than it sounds. Making large attacks, unfortunately, has half the normal score to even things out a bit. Also not OP, because it has it’s pros and cons. Make small attacks quickly!

3) Quad Rune: If you like the TRIANGLE OF DOOM, then you’ll love the QUADRANGLE OF DESTRUCTION! For 5 seconds, you are able to select a 4th rune (of the same type), thereby creating a square of DEATH that will work in the same manner as the Triangle. Trust me, if you’ve played this game as much as me, you’d know just how useful this ability is. Like that vacuum that you see on Television for three easy installments of 19.99, this baby gets into all those hard to reach corners!

4) Burn Rune: Once activated, you have 5 seconds to cause as much collateral damage as you can! Every attack you make causes adjacent runes to catch fire and slowly burn. It takes 3 seconds for them to explode after they’ve caught fire, and best of all, you get to keep the score from those runes. Why is this one not OP? The time constraints… Probably not as effective if you are running out of time, but it sure is fun to watch those runes burn. BURN, BABY, BURN! We’re pretty mean to these poor runes, huh?

5) Rogue Rune: Activating this rune makes the game into a sort of Where’s Waldo game. Almost a scavenger hunt. For 20 seconds, a new type of rune worth 2X the normal amount will appear randomly like it is any other rune. The trouble is, they are all different colors. Also, they are the same colors as the other runes, so look sharp! I think it’s obvious why this power isn’t Over Powered.

6)  Death Rune: Also known as the HAND OF DEATH. This sinister mercenary picks out random runes to destroy every second for 10 seconds and makes them EXPLODE VIOLENTLY. You get the equivalent of a four rune combo from each death, but be warned. It might end up destroying some of your own combos. It might even destroy YOU. Naw, I’m just pulling your leg. Maybe.

7) Omen Rune: An Omen was usually a good sign for a Viking. Some would even read signs before battle to divine the outcome. This Power Rune creates an abundance of a single type of rune. I am sure you’ll be able to find them, because they will be EVERYWHERE. There’s always a chance that this will create runes in bad spots. It’ll be up to your smart brain to decide which cluster to attack!

8) Reset Rune: The most basic rune, I saved for last. Well, last in the Power Runes you will use in both modes anyway. The Reset Rune does conveniently just like it’s name suggests. No, it won’t reset your game, but it will reset the playing field (as I like to call it), generating a whole new batch of runes. It’s best to save this one until you are out of all other options, as there is a chance it will not help at all. There’s a 50% chance that it could save your butt though.

Ok, now for the 2 runes you will be able to use in 1P mode.

1) Freeze Rune: This handy rune will stop time after you use it. Time will resume after your next attack. This is really handy if you take a while to find those super awesome combos. It is also handy if you need a pee break. Oops. Did I say that out loud? Well, don’t let it stop you from utilizing this rune for what ever purposes you can think of!

2) Runner Rune: Ever have one of those dreams where you’re running from something and no matter what you do, you cannot reach the door at the end of the hall way? It’s like it keeps moving away from you! Well, this rune works kind of the same way, except the door is the time clock and and the thing you are running from is a low score! After this activates you have 5 seconds (5!) to attack as many times as you can. Every attack will add valuable seconds to the time clock. Making small, easy attacks is key here! Trust me, it’s a lot harder than it sounds.

And the 2 runes only in PvP (Multi-Player) mode are…

1) Hex Rune: Causes a random assortment of beautiful CURSE RUNES to form on the other player’s playing field. Usually curse runes in PvP mode form when you make killer combos during regular play. This is like adding salt to your opponents already gangrenous wounds. So send a bouquet of lovely Curse Runes to a friend today!

2) Bless Rune: The opposite of the Hex Rune. You might be asking, “why would I want to get rid of my opponent’s Curse Runes?” You have it backwards, my friend! You get rid of those pesky runes that they gave to you! Really, I think what happens is it causes your Viking to sneeze so violently that all the Curses get blown away. Bless you.

Well, I think we’ve covered the PRs (Power Runes). We’ll talk more about Plunder when we get to that point. Until then, ta-ta!

S.L. Johnson, signing out (but not really).
